THOUGHT QUESTIONS

The Last Battle:

     1. In chapter one pay attention to the following quotes and think about what they mean in reference to truth and lies, choices and consequences, authorities and knowledge, deception and manipulation, honesty and rationalization: "Thinking isn't your strong point." "Why don't you let me do your thinking for you." "If you had never seen a real lion you might be deceived." "Think of the good we can do." "It would be wrong Shift." "Probably he sent us the lion skin on purpose, so that we could set things to right."

     2. Chp.2- If Aslan represents God, consider how the behavior of the king, the centaurs and the animals shows what they know about God, what they believe about Him and what kind of relationship they have with Him. What would your behavior tell others about God?

     3. Chp.3- Shift says, "You think freedom means doing what you like. That isn't true freedom. True freedom means doing what I tell you." What is true freedom? How is freedom achieved and maintained in any environment?

Benjamin Franklin:

The lecture mentioned that C.S. Lewis taught that moral rules—principles or truth—are directions for running the human machine. Benjamin Franklin, through his studies and thought came to the same conclusion. He said it this way,

“Revelation had indeed no weight with me as such; but I entertained an opinion that tho’ certain actions might not be bad because they were forbidden by it [God], or good because it [God] commanded them, yet probably those actions might be forbidden because they were bad for us or commanded because they were beneficial to us, in their own natures, all the circumstances of things considered. And this persuasion, with the kind hand of Providence, or some guardian angel, or accidental fabourable circumstances and situations, or all together, preserved me (thro’ this dangerous time of youth and the hazardous situations I was sometimes in among stranger, remote from the eye and advice of my father) without any wilful, gross immorality or injustice that might have been expected from my want of religion.”...
