SERIOUSLY one of the best children’s classics EVER written!! Little Britches by Ralph Moody offers everything a great book should– values, clear understanding of right and wrong, family-centered, strong parental role models, important life lessons, entertainment, vivid pictures of life in the past, humor, tears and so much more! When Ralph Moody’s family takes the advice of a cousin to purchase a run-down ranch in Colorado, the hard work of fixing up the home, acquiring animals, planting and making a living begin.
Problem after problem arises–the boys at school don’t like Ralph, the other ranchers don’t want to share the water, the weather almost destroys their crops, animals die, and many other complications present themselves but father is always determined to overcome. As Ralph works with his father and watches him rise above the obstacles he faces, Ralph learns important life lessons about his “CHARACTER HOUSE” that form his values for the rest of his life. And although this is a story told from the eyes of an 8 year old boy, this book is for anyone at any age.
If you really love this book, you can check out the community that still honors him at the museum in Littleton, Colorado, look at this “find” with the location of the fields in which he worked HERE. Or you could attend the National Little Britches Rodeo!
Principle: When we deceive in any way, we damage our character.
1- What is a “character house?” Why does it matter?
2- What are some things Ralph does that he is afraid will damage his character? Is he right or wrong?
3- Why does Ralph respect his father so much? How can parents gain this kind of respect?
4- What kind of work is Ralph doing at a young age? Can kids today work this hard? Are our expectations too low?
