Paradise Lost was written in the 1600’s during a period of tremendous political and religious turbulence. This epic poem by John Milton has had a huge impact on Western thought. It is considered one the pivotal works of the 17th century which, along with Shakespeare and the King James Bible helped to solidify the English language and earned Milton his place as one of the greatest poets of all time. His purpose was to “justify the ways of God to men,” in which he hoped to make men and women more obedient to God and His laws.
